Overview
This magnificent ornamental heliconia, called Red palulu in Suriname, can be found abundantly in the tropical rainforest of the Guianas. It is growing erect up to 12' tall and has up to 5 (five) lanceolate leaves, 6' long each. The bracts are light-to dark red with a yellow edge and a green top; they are a source of rainwater for birds and may insects. The seeds are formed in these bracts and are shiny violet. The pollination is done by hummingbirds and bats.
Hardiness USDA zone 9 - 11. Propagation Rhizomes and seeds. Culture Full sun / partial shade, well drained soil; needs high humidity.
Optimum temperature range is 60° - 85° F. Can also be grown in a very large container or in the greenhouse. Also beautiful as a cut flower; it will last up to 3 (three) weeks in water.
