The Talipot palm is originally from India; brought to Surinam by the East-Indian immigrants.
One of the tallest and most impressive palms with its huge trunk, up to 3½' in diameter. The trunck is covered with old leaf buses.
It grows up to a height of more than 100 ft. and has very large fan leaves, up to 10' wide.
This palm has an enormous inflorescence, shaped like an umbrella.
The talipot has round dark-green fruits falling by the thousands when ripe.
It grows slowly and lives between 60 - 80 years. The talipot fruits only once during its lifetime; after this fantastic bloom and fruiting the talipot dies. During the fruiting season it is literally raining down with fruits! The flowers are cream - while the fruits are olived colored; round and about 1 - 1½' in diameter. These flowers, millions of them, are on a 25 feet flowerstalk. Seeds are large and germinate easy, if they are fresh.
Due to its size it is only suitable for large tropical parks.
Hardiness: USDA zone 9B - 11. Propagation: seeds. Culture: full sun / partial shade; wet soil, has a low salt tolerance. Can witstand some cold (28° F).
Indoors they can be grown in containers for some time but eventually must be moved outdoors.
