Rutaceae (Citrus family).
Lime berry grows as an ornamental shrub to a height of 9'. It has trifoliate dark-green leaves and small, white fragrant flowers. These are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs). The edible lime tasting fruits are bright red with 2 - 3 small seeds.
Originally from Java, Indonesia, limeberry is growing abundantly in Suriname and cultivated as impenetrable hedges, due to the numerous small thorns of the stems.
It also can be used for bonsai cultivation.
The small fruit can be cooked to make preserve or used in frozen yogurts.
In traditional medicine from Java, the leaves are used externally against skin diseases and colic.
USDA zone 9 B - 11.
Seeds (fairly hardy).
Due to recalcitrant nature of the seeds, they have a short viable life, can not be dried well and can not withstand low temperatures for too long.
Full sun, partial shade. Soil: moist.
Plant in frost free locations.
