Some mechanistic studies on this compound's molecular effects have been conducted. The drug appears to be generally safe and one of the most important interactions of this plant has been associated with interference in the biological cycle of Vitamin K in the body. &#223-lapachone inhibits DNA topoisomerase I.<br><br> Topoisomerase inhibitors (including beta-lapachone) seem to be effective against several types of cancer, including lung, breast, colon and prostate cancers and malignant melanoma.<br> Since cancer cells grow and reproduce at a much faster rate than normal cells, they are more vulnerable to topoisomerase inhibition than are normal cells. Beta-lapachone also interferes with the replication of HIV-1, a virus that causes AIDS, thereby slowing the advancement of the disease.<br><br> Two drugs from the yew tree, <b>Taxol</b> (paclitaxel) and <b>Taxotere</b> (docetaxel) are currently considered to be the most important drugs in cancer chemotherapy. Both of them have shown some results in treatment of hormone refractory prostate cancer.<br> In a preclinical new study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute report that a two-drug therapy using Taxol and <b>beta-lapachone</b> artificially rebuilds the cell's quality-control system and can completely destroy human tumor cells grown in laboratory animals.</font><br><br> <font face="arial" size="3"><u><b>Dosage</u> </b><br><br> </font> <font face="arial" size="2"><b>Tincture: </b><br> Children (10 years): one half of the adult doses.<br> Children (14 years): three quarter of the adult doses.<br> Adults: 30 drops (1 ml): 2 - 3 times a day in water or juice.<br><br> <b>Infusion:</b><br> Boil 1 - 1&#189 tsp in 1 cup water (8 oz) for about 10 minutes.
