Overview
A succulent perennial that is indigenous to South America; it has a basal rosette, hollow
stems and grows up to 3 - 5 feet tall. Plantlets grow along the notches of the leaf margins, they can develop while
still attached to the plant or when detached; it has a very amazing ability to grow anywhere.
The flowers are bell-like and pendulous; it has dark green fleshy alternate leaves.
These plants require very little water.
Suriname's traditional medicine
The Wonder of The World (because of its many medicinal uses) has many different
applications such as against migraines and headaches, inflammations, the leaves are applied to boils and skin- &
gastric ulcers.
The crushed leaves taste slightly sour and bland; they are used for asthma; the fresh juice of the leaves is used
to treat bronchitis, other upper respiratory infections and whooping coughs.
Scientific research suggests that the air plant reduces fevers, and may provide anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving
and muscle relaxant effects.
In India the juice of the fresh leaves is used effectively for the treatment of jaundice.
Further used against headaches, backaches/ rheumatism.
The Bufadienolides in the leaves have antibacterial, antitumorous, cancer preventative, and insecticidal
actions. These isolated compounds isolated include bryophillin A which showed strong anti-tumor promoting activity,
also included bersaldegenin-3-acetate and bryophillin C.
